You may feel a “qi sensation” when the needles are first inserted. It may feel like a brief pinch, a dull ache, or a sensation of fullness around the needle that quickly disperses. Some people feel sensations in remote parts of the body, along the channels or pathways of qi. Needles are very thin – like a single hair. Acupuncture needles are sterile and disposable, and are NOT similar to hypodermic (injection) needles, in case you are phobic!
Most people relax deeply, and may experience a profound sense of well-being and relief. Some patients report the release of old patterns, and a stirring of profound emotions may arise as part of the healing process. Most fall asleep, or feel a trance-like deep relaxation. We honor, protect, and respect your privacy and processes of your sessions. You may opt for other treatment modalities if you are needle phobic, like massage, body work, cups, herbs, or Energy Balancing.
We often include a brief massage before or after acupuncture treatments to dredge and open the channels/meridian pathways of qi, which helps relaxation and deepens the treatment effects. We may also combine acupuncture with tuina, cupping, moxibustion, e-stim (electrical stimulation), or ear seeds, and we may make herbal recommendations and suggestions for follow-up care.
Please allow 50-60 minutes for followup treatments.
We tailor the treatments to each individual – taking into account long and short term goals and lifestyle habits. Each person’s health is unique and results may vary. Many health conditions have developed over long periods of time. Your concerns may take more or less time to experience results, depending on each case. A beginning series of 6-8 treatments is recommended for acupuncture in order to integrate the treatment, and after evaluating your progress, we then make recommendations that support your lifestyle and budget.
We can work in conjunction with your western medical care.
